Week of innovation, discovery at SQI Robotics Bootcamp 1.0

Published by

At the recently concluded robotics boot camp, a free practical training session organized by SQI College of ICT, participants of all ages learned about the endless potential of technology in an exciting and dynamic week-long exploration into the world of robots.

The event, which was held from October 23-27 at the cutting-edge venue, SQI College of ICT main campus, Ogbomoso, Oyo state was a life-changing experience that left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

From the very first day, we welcomed around 100 enthusiastic participants who dived into the fascinating world of robotics.

They received a thorough introduction to robotics and industrial robotic arms and witnessed firsthand cutting-edge prototyping equipment, including 3D printers, PCB printers, and laser cutting machines. Additionally, students had a hands-on Computer-Aided Design session, creating 3D models of an industrial robotic arm model from scratch.

One of the key highlights was the inclusivity of the boot camp. Whether participants were beginners with no prior robotics experience or seasoned enthusiasts, everyone found a place to thrive. The curriculum, expertly crafted by seasoned instructors, seamlessly catered to various skill levels, ensuring that each participant could grasp the fundamentals while still being challenged to reach new heights.

Throughout the week, participants delved into the intricacies of robotics, learning the fundamentals of Python programming language through Jupyter’s REPL interface and edge to the test by creating programs to interact with their newfound knowledge to display by creating programs to interact with sensors and output devices on the Raspberry Pi Pico, pushing the boundaries of what they could control.

They went beyond simple sensors and components, gaining hands-on experience with their first electronic actuator, then transformed their computer-aided designs from virtual 3D models into tangible reality through 3D printing, bringing their creative visions to life.

From mastering more electronic components to the ultimate challenge of constructing a robotic arm from the ground up, it was a thrilling experience.

The hardware and software aspects of building the robotic arm were both a ton of fun and a rewarding challenge for each team as they put their newly acquired skills to the test.

According to the director of SQI College of ICT, Adeyemi C. Aderinto, who also made a special appearance at the event, the collaborative nature of the boot camp was intentional. We want to build an environment where participants are not merely observers but teammates, problem-solvers, and creators so that as they navigate challenges together, friendships blossom and a palpable sense of camaraderie emerges.

He also mentioned that as the digital landscape continues to shape our lives, SQI will continue to stand as a beacon of hope, opening doors and paving the way for tomorrow’s innovators to create a bright future through the power of ICT.

On the last day of the project, the various teams competed head-to-head! It was a day filled with anticipation as they collaborated to create line-following mobile robots. The challenge was not only to write functional programs from scratch but also to excel in a team environment.

Participants displayed their projects during the closing ceremony, showcasing the amazing accomplishments accomplished in just one week. Friends and colleagues were beaming with pride and success as they saw firsthand the life-changing experience that their loved ones had gone through.

At the end of this incredible week, participants, during an interview with them, said the robotics boot camp had given them renewed confidence and ignited a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, encouraging attendees to envision futures where they play a pivotal role in shaping technological advancements. They all couldn’t wait to attend the next edition in 2024.
