We will not join strike, our salaries are paid steadily ― Ojukwu Varsity ASUU

Published by

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) chapter, has resolved never to join any strike, whether local or national, as the Union has no issues with the university management and their salaries are paid as at when due.

The members of COOU, reached the resolution during a meeting at the University premises Igbariam Campus, on Tuesday.

Tribune Online had earlier reported that the ASUU Owerri Zonal, during a press conference on Monday held at ASUU Secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, announced it preparation to join the plan Nationwide strike by the national body.

The Zone, through its Coordinator, Comrade Uzo Onyebinama, warned that once it embarks on another strike, that it would not suspend it unless every agreement is duly implemented. It, therefore, called on well-meaningful Nigerians to once again, prevail on the federal government to do the needful or risk another industrial unrest.

Speaking during the meeting, the Chairman of the Union (COOU), Professor Osita Chiaghanam said the academic staff union of the university has no reason to work against the school management, as the present administration of Professor Greg Nwakoby has transformed the university both infrastructurally and in human capacity development.

Professor Chiaghanam revealed that they decided not to join any of the ASUU strikes because the reasons for the strikes are always in favour of only the federal universities, and the strike also affects the academic calendar of the institution which benefits nothing from the ASUU agitations.

He assured the academic staff of Chukwuemaka Odumegwu Ojukwu University of continuously improved welfare and asked them to always support the school management for all-around progress of the institution, even as he warned those engineering crises in the university to desist forthwith.

On his part, the Public Relations Officer of COOU ASUU, who is also the Acting Dean Faculty of Physical Sciences of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kingsley Nwozor revealed that before the administration of Professor Nwakoby, the university had just thirty Professors but now has a total of one hundred and twenty professors, with other numerous achievements.

Professor Nwozor emphasized the need for the staff of the institution to be united and collectively work towards the continuous improvement of their welfare.

Also speaking, an elderly member of the COOU ASUU, Professor Anthony Agbata advised members of the union in the university to embrace peace and shun violence for the actualization of their collective goal and that of the university.
