A total of 7,246 complaints were received between 2019 and June 17, 2023 by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), the state regulatory agency in charge of ensuring that consumers’ rights are not violated in the state, has said.
The agency, in its graphical representation of complaints received and treated, tagged, ‘LASCOPA Complaints Chart Update As At 17th June 2023,’ on its official Twitter handle, stated that out of the figure, the consumer regulatory agency was able to resolve 6,926, while 163 of the cases were ongoing, in the period under review. A total of 121 complaints were said to have been referred during the period.
The relatively recent figures from the agency revealed the growing attention the agency has continued to garner from consumers in the state. For instance, at the 2022 edition of the Lagos International Trade Fair organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), held in November, the General Manager of the agency, Mr Afolabi Solebo, had, while delivering his speech, stated that the agency had received 6,244 complaints out of which 5,909 were resolved from 2019 to November 2022.
The new figures revealed that the agency, in the past seven months, received additional 1,002 complaints while it had also been able to resolve 1,017 more cases within the period.
But while the recent graphics were silent on other details such as amount of money recovered within the period and compensation paid, the agency had, as at of November last year, said it recovered a total sum of N172,615,484.15 and $30,250 for consumers whose rights were violated within the period under review.
The funds, the agency stated, served as compensation and outright refund of payment for returned substandard products, goods, products and services for various categories of consumers.
The agency, during the period, also instituted a total of 25 cases against erring stores, companies and individuals involved in consumer rights’ infractions in the state, out of which 12 were adjudicated and closed.
In March this year, the agency wielded the big stick against Chiffy Supermarket, sealing off the supermarket located at No. 3, Oduduwa Crescent GRA, Ikeja, for selling expired toothpaste and expired household products.
The agency is presently investigating the circumstances surrounding the actual cause of the elevator that malfunctioned at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, in August, claiming the life of a young medical doctor, Vwaere Diaso, an intern at the hospital.
