We can only achieve UHC with effective allocation of resources — Pate

Published by

The coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, has revealed that the country and its sub-nationals would only achieve universal health coverage with effective allocation of healthcare resources.

The minister explained that the federal government under President Bola Tinubu was committed to improving the nation’s healthcare system with policies and programmes that would ensure equal access to healthcare for all citizens.

Pate spoke on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, during the opening of the 64th National Council on Health with the theme, ‘Building Resilience and an Inclusive Healthcare System for a Healthy Nigeria’.

He said, “Efficiency, equity, and quality are the three pillars that support a successful healthcare system. Achieving UHC requires us to ensure that our healthcare resources are allocated effectively.

“We need to invest in preventative care, primary healthcare, and essential services that reach the most vulnerable among us. Efficiency also means reducing waste, improving resource management, and embracing modern technology to streamline healthcare delivery.

“Our healthcare system should be robust and responsive, meeting the unique needs of each community it serves. Quality is the thread that weaves through all these efforts. We have recorded giant strides in improving access, and we must now put in place guided actions to address quality across the continuum of healthcare.

“We will work to eliminate the silos and bridge the gaps between research, production, distribution, and consumption of healthcare and human resources for health. This will involve innovative financing mechanisms, public-private partnerships, and a commitment to research and development in healthcare.

“Already, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has approved the adoption, design, and implementation of a domesticated, context-sensitive sector-wide approach as an innovative, holistic, and coordinated strategy for the improvement of health outcomes.”

On his part, the Ekiti state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, commended the council for its untiring efforts at improving healthcare delivery over the years, saying that “the overarching theme underscores our collective commitment to delivering a healthcare system that is robust, resilient, and inclusive, ensuring that every Nigerian has equitable access to quality healthcare without financial hardship.”

The governor stated that his administration, in the last year of its inception, has invested in the health sector with infrastructure upgrades and motivation for the workers across the 177 primary healthcare facilities, which he said has enabled effective delivery.

“In the health sector, under my leadership, we have demonstrated a significant commitment to improving the health status of our populace through a holistic approach to health system development, with particular emphasis on strengthening our primary health care system to promote a preventive approach to health and as the entry point to care as we strive to achieve universal health coverage,” Oyebanji said.
