Chairman of the Body of Fellows, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Oyo State, Deacon Adetunji Adeleke has said the Institution is working hard towards curbing the activities of quacks in the profession.
Adeleke stated this during a programme organised for the leaders of the Institution with the theme, ‘Sustenance of Good Leadership in a Professional Institution.’
He said the Body of Fellows in Oyo State chapter of NIS would continue to play its advisory roles for the development of the profession.
Adeleke emphasised that the hallmark of a leader is financial accountability and integrity, just as he urged members to be accountable at all times.
Adeleke, who is also a resource person at the programme said: “This retreat becomes necessary to stem the tide of impunity, a cankerworm that may destroy the integrity and decorum expected of a professional institution like ours.
“We want to encourage our leaders who occupy one position or the other, from the chairmen of committees, committee members, chairmen of sub-committees among others to be up and doing and also remind them of the essence of our professional calling; the rules and regulations of Surveyors Registration Council of Nigeria (SURCON) and the ethics of the profession.
“As leaders, they are chosen by God, though watched by men and acknowledged by men and therefore there is a minimum level of expectation and behaviour and patterns that we expect of them in conformity to the ethics of the profession.
“And as leaders, they know that they were elected by members, they should epitomise the best in the profession, both within and outside their professional calling.”
Speaking on the hallmark of a good leader, a resource person, Mr Olatunde Fagbamigbe, said “Our society is experiencing a pressing need for leadership today than ever before, adding that it can be felt in our homes, organisations, like our profession, and more vividly in our government.
“We need leaders more than ever before; we especially need leaders who will take us far for a better future.
“We need people who have vision; who have courage; people with the ability to chart new seas and break new grounds.
“Unfortunately, this is seriously dwindling or totally lacking in many instances and we are not getting better for it; what we have is a society where accountability, honesty, competence etc are being eroded gradually, while inexperience, incompetence, unproductivity and worst still, corruption, are being celebrated. Sad enough, the gap is getting wider by the day,” he said.
Also, the NIS Chairman, Oyo State branch, Mr Waheed Lamidi, charged members to stick with the ethics of the profession in order to move the association forward.
Other resource persons at the training are, Ola Shiyanbola and Mojeed Nafiu, who also urged leaders to live up to expectations.
