DELTA State government has promised to take decisive action to curb human trafficking, aiming to reduce its prevalence significantly, if not eliminate it entirely.
This was disclosed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, during a meeting with the Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Benin City, Mr. Aganran Alao, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Asaba.
Ohwovoriole assured that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is committed to addressing rise in human trafficking within the state.
He revealed that a new law targeting human traffickers is at its final stage in the state House of Assembly, following a public hearing.
The law, according to Ohwovoriole, is specifically designed to intensify penalties for human trafficking offences.
One of its provisions will allow the seizure of properties belonging to convicted traffickers, with the proceeds being directed towards supporting the victims.
“We are prepared to ensure that this crime is brought to its lowest level, if not completely eradicated,” Ohwovoriole said, stressing the seriousness of the state’s efforts.
He expressed concern over recent reports from NAPTIP indicating that Delta State had surpassed Edo State as the state with the highest incidence of human trafficking in Nigeria.
The Zonal Commander of NAPTIP in Benin City highlighted the agency’s role in combating human trafficking.
He explained that NAPTIP, which was established by an Act of the National Assembly in 2003, is responsible for tackling a range of criminal activities, including human trafficking, online scams and extortion.
Alao emphasized the agency’s authority to arrest and prosecute offenders, seize their assets and rehabilitate survivors.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of the Delta State Government and NAPTIP to combat the growing human trafficking crisis and ensure justice for victims.
