WASA 2024: 8 Division Army celebrates cultural activities in Sokoto

Nigerian Army’s 8 Division highlighted its operational achievements during the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration, held on January 25, 2025, at the 26 Battalion Parade Ground, Giginya Barracks, Sokoto.

The event, which showcased cultural diversity and military accomplishments, was graced by dignitaries, including the Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, Governor of Sokoto State.

In his opening remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, emphasized the Division’s significant achievements in 2024, calling the year both challenging and rewarding.

Speaking on some of the achievements of the Division, Major General Ajose highlighted the establishment of the 248 Recce Battalion in Illelah and the deployment of the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion VII in Gudu as critical developments in countering banditry and terrorism. The introduction of advanced air assets and combat enablers further strengthened operational capacity.

“These initiatives led to the neutralization of several bandit leaders, the restoration of peace, and the revival of socioeconomic activities across our Area of Responsibility (AOR),” he said.

The GOC also acknowledged the Division’s infrastructure improvements, such as the asphalting of a 1 km road in Giginya Cantonment and the renovation of residential blocks for soldiers and their families. These efforts underscored the Army’s commitment to troop welfare and readiness.

He also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General O. Oluyede, and Governor Ahmad Aliyu for their unwavering support. He assured the audience of the Division’s continued focus on maintaining peace and security in Sokoto and beyond.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (Rtd), commended the Army’s operational successes and reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting military efforts.

The WASA event, rooted in the historical traditions of the West African Frontier Force since 1901, provided a platform to foster unity among troops, their families, and the host community. Highlights included cultural performances and the traditional beating of retreat.

In his closing remarks, Major General Ajose thanked the families of troops for their sacrifices, describing the celebration as a reflection of shared accomplishments and resilience. He urged personnel to remain vigilant and professional in their duties.

The 2024 WASA celebration not only honored cultural diversity but also spotlighted the remarkable achievements of the 8 Division, reaffirming its dedication to safeguarding national security and promoting unity.
