Professor Afis Oladosu
A professor of Middle Eastern, North African and Cultural Studies, Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Afis Oladosu, has described as insane, wanton embezzlement of public funds and acquisition of material things which cannot be used up in a lifetime.
Oladosu, on Wednesday, in Ibadan, as the guest speaker at the Ramadan lecture of the Oyo State House of Assembly, lamented that many Nigerians have immersed themselves in corruption in the name of building a good life for their children and generation unborn.
Speaking on “Taming the Monster Corruption: Muslims on Call,” the don expressed regrets that material corruption in the country is also aided by greediness of lawyers.
He charged legislators to advance the causes of the masses rather than personal interests or those of governors or the president.
“Most persons immersed in material corruption are insane because they gather what they can’t spend in a lifetime. It is only such people that can explain the pleasure they derive from stealing. They embezzle for their children and families to come. Material corruption is also aided by the greediness of lawyers,” Oladosu said.
He underscored the need for Nigerians to purge themselves of spiritual corruption which he described as the foundation of other kinds of corruption.
Oladosu also hammered the need for Nigerians to always show good judgement and pick out lies they are told by their leaders.
The state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Mudathir Abdulganiyu, who chaired the occasion, called on parents to instil in their children, godly virtues and good character.
