WAEC blacklists 47 Kogi schools over exam malpractices

The Kogi state government on Tuesday said at least 47 secondary schools in the state had been blacklisted by the West African Council Examination (WAEC) over their alleged involvement in examination malpractices.

The blacklisted schools that are spread across the state will not present candidates for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASCE).

The Kogi State Commissioner For Education Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, who said at a media briefing in Lokoja, the state capital, also warned against politicising issues of education in the state.

According to her, despite the improvement in the education sector, the state still remained number one in examination malpractices in Nigeria.

She said the bad name being given to the state because of examination malpractices was unacceptable to the present administration, saying concerted efforts were being made to stop the trend.

Oshikoya said parents and guardians should ensure that their children are well prepared for examinations instead of aiding them to success through malpractices.

Osikoya while calling for support from the public to fight the scourge of examination malpractice warned against politicising education in Kogi State.

She noted that certain decisions that would be taken by the present administration to develop the education sector should not be read political meaning to as such steps would be taken to enhance the standard of education in the state.

Speaking on the fate of teachers in the employment of the state government, Osikoya said the Yahaya Bello administration had no plans to sack teachers as widely speculated in some quarters.

She said efforts were being made to further improve the quality of the teachers to enable them to impact improved knowledge on their pupils and students.
