Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has charged Nigeria’s civil service with quality service delivery, saying there is a critical need to reposition the service to move away from redundancy and inefficiency that have previously characterised the system.
Shettima, who Dr Tope Fasua, Special Adviser, represented to the President on Economic Affairs, spoke at the 2nd graduation ceremony of the Leadership Enhancement and Development Programme (Lead-P), batch 2, where a total of 106 participants graduated on Friday in Abuja.
He maintained that the civil service, which is the backbone of the government, must be repositioned for enhanced quality service delivery and to be able to deliver on the renewed hope agenda of the current administration.
Shettima described the event as a further turning point in the fortunes of the public service in Nigeria, saying that with the rigorous training and leadership, the graduates have gone through over the past few months, “it is now believed that we are unleashing on our public service-ready game-changers and change ambassadors.”.
“We have to work away from the reputation of redundancy and inefficiency to be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation,” he said.
The graduation ceremony was the climax of classroom and practical field training to which the participants, selected from middle-level officers of GL 1O–14, were exposed for about a year.
A total of 106 participants from different ministries, departments, and agencies of government participated in the second batch of the leadership training programme organised by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation with support from the AIG-Imoukhuede Foundation, among others.
In her remark, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, said that LEAD-P is one of the three core training programmes contained in the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (2021-2025), as approved by the Federal Executive Council, with the other two being the Service-wide Structured Mandatory Assessment-Based Training Programme (SMAT-P) and Induction Training Programme.
She disclosed that a total of 118 civil servants of GL 10–14 were also trained last year under LEAD-P batch 1, saying that because of the outstanding performance of this first batch in their various ministries and agencies, there is now a high demand for LEAD-P officers coming from some offices within the service.
Yemi-Esan, speaking on the sustainability of the training programme, noted that the plan was to ensure that more than 100 officers are selected to participate in the programme every year, adding that her office would go ahead to designate a particular cadre for the LEAD-P participants so that they are not lost in the service.
The co-founder of Guarantee Trust Bank, Mr Tajudeen Adeola, who was the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony, challenged the civil servants to see their roles as an opportunity to transform Nigeria, noting that the country is undoubtedly faced with enormous challenges in almost all sectors.
He particularly urged the civil servants to allow integrity and accountability to guide their decisions and actions, while also calling on the government to ensure fair compensation for workers in terms of wage awards.
