Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has adjourned a divorce case brought before it involving a woman, Bilikisu Abiola, who is the plaintiff and  her husband, Saidi Abiola, the defendant.

Bilikisu who accused her husband of maltreatment, constant beatings and threat to life, appealed to the court to put an end to their seven-year-old relationship and grant her custody of their two children.

Saidi after the claims have been read to him did not admit to them.

After listening to the evidence of both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje stated that the evidence of their family members would be needed.

He thus adjourned the case till February 28, and ordered both parties to come with their children and parents.

Bilikisu giving her evidence, said, “I become a drum which my husband beats on daily basis since we got married seven years ago.

“He has nearly snuffed life out of me with his beatings. He not only beats me, he also destroys my property.

“He is a failure as a husband and father.  Our children see him as a terror because he’s always shouting at them especially when they make demands of him. He will always tell them to come to me. He starves me and our children on regular basis.

“He always threatens to kill me. The last time he beat me he hit me with an iron rod and broke my head. I bled and was rushed to the hospital where my head was stitched.

“I often report him to his parents but his mother is always taking sides with him.

“My lord, I pray you dissolve our marriage so that I don’t die before my time, “she said.

“My lord, I don’t agree to divorce, “Saidi told the court.

“Our kids are young and I don’t want them to suffer in case she’s awarded their custody because she can’t care for them.

“She wants to leave me because my fortune has nosedived.  I counseled her to be patient because I believe that very soon my business will pick up again but she’s not ready to bear with me.

“She now looks down on me in the home and had presented me before her family members as one of no value or worth.

“Some few months back when we had a misunderstanding, she invited her siblings to come and insult me. Her mother later came to fight me.

“Her father who had always stayed clear of our matter was the one who advised her to pack her belongings out of my home, “the defendant concluded.
