Voter apathy mars Adamawa LG elections

The July 13th local government elections may have taken place in all the 226 wards in Adamawa state, reports from most of the polling units visited across the state show that the process was peaceful but marred with poor turnout of the electorates.

As of noon today, many polling units were empty as electoral officers were yet to be at the polling units except a few security officers.

However, a few minutes after midday, voting started with the few people who came out to cast their votes.

In far away Kirshiga, Madagali local government area of the state, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri exercised his franchise by casting his vote at United 001 ward.

The governor shortly after casting his vote, expressed satisfaction with the processes of the local government elections.

In an interview with newsmen in his ward, he said “I am grateful for the manner in which the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) organised the election,” 

“Though no process is perfect but reports reaching us show that people came out to elect their leaders, people are very happy and there are high expectations.

“By the grace of God, New leaders will emerge from this process,” Governor Fintiri added.

Responding to public expectations for governance after the election, the Governor said the state should expect greater participation by young people and women.

He further stated that the government belongs to the people, and his administration will continue to nurture youths into good leaders.

Meanwhile, some voters who spoke with Tribune Online expressed divergent views, Mr. Tom Uba said “The turnout is very poor. The reason for this is due to the economic crisis not only in Adamawa but Nigeria as a whole but I thank God the process was peaceful.”

Mrs. Margaret Kulba and Mr. Bukar Minnah expressed their satisfaction with the process.
