Vocational, technical education should be better positioned in Nigeria — Provost

PROVOST, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, Dr Wahab Azeez, has stated that vocational and technical education should be better positioned in the country because of its inherent benefits to nation-building.

He stated this while briefing newsmen on the college’s  combined 38th convocation ceremony.

According to him, if there are enough people with vocational and technical skills in the country and they are competent to handle jobs, they will be easily spotted for engagements which will be cost-effective.

He therefore urged the government at all levels to give higher premium to vocational and technical education.

He said the subsector is really one of the major sources of income to many families not only in Nigeria but also globally, and the government should give better attention to it.

Speaking about the convocation, Wahab said a total of 642 students would be awarded the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), while 109 and 759 would be awarded Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) and diploma in Distance Learning Programmes (DLP) under the 2017/2018 academic sessions, respectively.

He also noted that 545, 639, and 96 of the 2018/2019 set would be awarded NCE, DLP and PDE respectively, adding that 552, 524, and 74 graduands will be awarded NCE, DLP and PDE respectively.

According to him, 552, 524 and 74 graduands of 2019/2020 set would be awarded NCE, DLP and PDE respectively, while 537, 484 and 64 graduands of 2020/2021 set will be awarded NCE, DLP and PDE respectively.

Also, 611, 514 and 45 graduands of the 2021/2022 set will be awarded NCE, DLP and PDE respectively.

He stated that all the graduands, just like those before them, were thoroughly trained by the college and would certainly do well in their respective fields.
