Vietnam to elect new President in October

Published by

Vietnam’s national assembly will elect a new President in October, according to the State media on Tuesday.

Vietnam, a one-party communist state has been a unified country since 1975, with a record as one of south-east Asia’s fastest-growing economies.

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is an authoritarian state ruled by a single party.

Vietnam has a four-pillar leadership structure; the presidency is one of the key roles, followed by the Communist Party general secretary, the prime minister, and the head of the National Assembly. The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) is led by General Secretary, Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung, and President, Truong Tan Sang.

Current President, To Lam, was named general secretary or head of the ruling Communist Party in August following the death of his predecessor, Nguyen Phu Trong, who held both positions at the same time between October 2018 and April 2021.

The main executive state power of Vietnam is headed by the Prime Minister, who has several Deputy Prime Ministers and several ministers in charge of particular activities. The executive branch is responsible for the implementation of political, economic, cultural, social, national defence, security and external activities of the state.

On 18 May 2024, General Tô Lâm was nominated by the Central Committee of the Communist Party to become Vietnam’s next president.

An indirect presidential election was held in Vietnam on 22 May 2024. The election took place just one year after the 2023 election of President Võ Văn Thưởng, who resigned on 20 March 2024.

The National Assembly of Vietnam formally convened to elect To Lâm as Vietnam’s 13th president, with 472 of 473 delegates attending voted for him and 1 voting blank.

On Monday, the rubber-stamp national assembly announced three new deputy prime ministers, a chief judge, a chief prosecutor and two ministers

“The National Assembly will complete the presidency position at its regular session in October,” the state-run Voice of Vietnam said on Tuesday.
