VIDEO: Meranda voluntarily resigned as Lagos Speaker, Obasa claims

Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has claimed that his successor and current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has voluntarily resigned from her position during a recent peace meeting.

Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Thursday, Obasa claimed that Meranda announced her resignation in the presence of party leaders at a meeting held at the Lagos House in Marina over the weekend.

He said, “There was a meeting that took place in Marina, where we have in attendance all the party leaders and all the members, and openly, Meranda herself made a statement that she has stepped down and she has resigned.”

Obasa further refuted the possible political undertones behind the withdrawal of security aides of the Speaker the same morning he was to storm the Assembly complex, claiming that Meranda’s voluntary resignation from the office necessitated the withdrawal.

He said, “Now, when someone resigns from office, the associated paraphernalia is taken away.”

Responding to the question on whether he has also resigned as rumoured to be part of the arrangement at the peace meeting, Obasa challenged anyone who has his resignation letter to present it.

“Let them present the resignation letter. And if I were to resign, would I still be here? I’m sure you’d still address me as Speaker, even though we’ve never had a conversation before,” Obasa added.

Meanwhile, this is coming after the embattled Speaker, Obasa, had stormed the Lagos State Assembly complex Thursday morning with heavy security, declaring himself as the authentic Speaker, and presided over a plenary session with only four lawmakers.
