The Nigeria Police Force has explained how a 38-year-old TikToker, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, landed in custody for allegedly spreading false and provocative content on social media.
Speaking at a press conference, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the suspect was arrested on December 8, 2024, by operatives of the National Cyber Crime Centre in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to the police, Ekhorutomuen’s actions were aimed at tarnishing the Force’s reputation and inciting public unrest.
“On December 8, 2024, operatives of the Force apprehended Destiny Ekhorutomuen for allegedly creating multiple social media accounts to disseminate false and inciting material designed to provoke the public against the Nigeria Police,” said Adejobi.
Adejobi cited a specific case of misinformation involving a viral video from 2019. “There was a time when a video went viral where they were saying that the Deputy Commissioner of Police was arrested or was sharing arms; giving arms to bandits in Kaduna which was posted by a lecturer. And this young man, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, who has just been arrested, made a video and started laying emphasis on this fake information, false information, and fake news.”
He further explained that Ekhorutomuen’s actions persisted despite the police’s efforts to debunk the misinformation.
“He recirculated the content and incited the members of the public against the government and the police. As well as attacking a police institution which of course this particular incident occurred in 2019 and the unfortunate thing was that he made a video after the Nigerian Police Force had debunked the fake information,” Adejobi added.
Adejobi reiterated police commitment to addressing the spread of false information online, warning that those who engage in such acts will face the full weight of the law.
