Veterinarians decry exclusion from infectious disease bill

Published by

The forum of young veterinarians in Nigeria have decried the exclusion of animal health stakeholders in the infectious disease bill as proposed by the House of Representatives.

In statement made available to newsmen, which reads in part, it said “While we welcome the decision of the National Assembly on putting up a more robust and effective framework which will adequately address the realities of this present time characterized by emerging and re-emerging diseases, we find it hard to reckon with the fact that critical stakeholders in this regard were left out by the leadership of the committee.”

“It is therefore important to note that the aims and objectives of the NASS and the sponsors of the bill might not be achieved with the exclusion of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Veterinary Council of Nigeria, National Veterinary Research Institute, Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association and the Small Animal Veterinary Association of Nigeria.”

It noted that the exclusion of Veterinarians, be it deliberate or an oversight, is a great disservice to the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill and not in the best interest of Nigerians who deserve good representation from the members of the National Assembly.

While emphasizing the importance of the Veterinary Profession and the Animal Health Sector in the formulation of the Control of Infectious Diseases Act and by Extension, the Health Sector, it highlighted that no one understands the dynamics of the Infectious Diseases of animal origin that has kept the world at bay better than Veterinarians.

The group expressed optimum faith in the leadership of the House of Representatives especially in addressing the issue.
