Speaking during an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos, Mayowa Usman, whose stage name is Usman Trips, noted that he was coming into the Nigerian music industry with the song ‘Sade’ because it blended with what was trending in the industry at the moment.
“The song that I am promoting at the moment is ‘Sade’. ‘Sade’ was actually inspired by a girl that I met while I was schooling at Lancaster University, Ghana.”
He pointed out that he recorded the song in Ghana last year and the video was shot in the United Kingdom, adding that he was coming into the music industry to give Nigerian music lovers value for their money based on the choice of his songs.
Usman Trips, whose type of music is tagged Afrofusion, however, stressed that he did not get any inspiration from Adekunle Gold’s ‘Sade’ nor Mayorkun’s, adding that the he named the track ‘Sade’ because it was the name of the girl he met while schooling at Lancaster University, Ghana.
“Every song you write comes from an inspiration that you have experienced. So, when I met the girl named Sade, she influenced me in a way that it inspired me to write a song for her. That was how the song came about” Usman noted.
Asked how he would break even into the Nigerian music industry, Usman Trips pointed out that he had a lot of sensational songs that would resonate with the Nigerian audience and that would keep him in the industry for a very long time.
“I have songs that actually talk about things that happen in society. I actually have a track called ‘Opposite sides’ where I sampled Fela’s instrumentals on it and the song talks about ills of
society. ‘Sade’ is just like an introduction so that one would know that this is what is coming in the nearest future.” he said.
Usman noted that artistes like Wizkid, Falz, Olamide were amongst some of the Nigerians musicians that he looked up to, hoping that he would get to such pinnacle of success in the nearest future in his music career.
Also speaking, his manager, Chibuzor Nwanah, stressed that he was confident that Usman Trips would go far in the music industry in Nigeria. Asked if Usman Trips would be signed to a record label, Mr. Nwanah pointed out that he wanted him to become popular in the industry first as that was sacrosanct at the moment.
“I don’t want anybody under the guise of a record label to treat him as an upcoming artiste. I want him to prove his worth then the record label issue can be discussed” he said.
