The Rotary Club of Gbagada, Lagos State, has called on influential Nigerians to use their wealth to serve and uplift the less-privileged people in society.
The newly inaugurated president of the club, Olubunmi Oguntade, made the call during her investiture as the 40th president of the body, which took place at the Yoruba Tennis Club, Lagos Island.
She appreciated members for their unwavering support for humanity, reiterating her commitment to the club and humanity at large.
The event was also used by the club to honour a philanthropist, Otunba Tajudeen Abass, and others for supporting charity causes in the country.
Honoured alongside Otunba Abass were Omolara Balogun, Wale Adegbite, Ade Raji, Ochanaya ‘Gina Dan Ugo, and Ademola Okulaja.
The club president promised that the year would be fruitful and full of notable activities, assuring that she would not relent in her commitment to serving the community and making a positive impact on society.
Oguntade called on all present at the event and others to join the club in achieving its target of providing a 25-bed paediatric ward at Gbagada General Hospital.
She commended the awardees for their immense contributions to the service of humanity, urging them not to relent in supporting the cause of helping the needy in society.
Otunba Abass, while speaking after his recognition, said he considered the award a personal milestone and an opportunity to be part of humanity and part of the resilience that had actually defined the nation and the Rotary Club of Gbagada.
Abass, while acknowledging that the Rotary Club of Gbagada had for years “chosen to be a beacon of hope to the underprivileged in our society with so many intervention programmes aimed at positively impacting the underprivileged,” said being honoured with the award made him feel very special.
“The greatness of humanity,” they say, “is not just in being human but in being humane philosophically to make society a better place. And what I can do is continue with that tradition.
“It is an opportunity for me to do more for society because one cannot change the entire world overnight, but we can change one life at a time by having the compassion and the desire to make society a better place,” he said.
Speaking further, Abass noted that the event is not just about the award but to raise funds to fund a 25-bed paediatric ward at Gbagada General Hospital costing N25 million, saying it was about access to quality health services.
“That’s the project for today; we should not close our eyes to that. And of course, there are numerous other projects that are in the pipeline aimed at making life more meaningful. So our goal is to raise N25 million to fund that paediatric ward at the hospital.
“Beyond that, it is about access to quality health services. That’s the project for today; we should not close our eyes to that, and of course, there are numerous other projects that are in the pipeline aimed at making life more meaningful. So our goal is to raise N25 million to fund that paediatric ward at the hospital,” Abass stated.
Abass equally urged other well-meaning Nigerians and non-governmental organisations to join hands in the service of humanity, saying that “is the only way we can make our society better; we cannot expect the government to do everything.”
“When you climb the ladder of success, that does not preclude you from looking down that ladder and raising somebody up to make them successful as well.
“That is the only way we can make our society better; we cannot expect the government to do everything. It is incumbent upon me, you, and also non-governmental organisations to work together, to collaborate together, to make society a better place,” he added.
