GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, on Wednesday, stressed the need for the nation’s police to be up to speed with policing trends in developed countries by ensuring that their policing activities are driven by technology.
Ajimobi who identified this imperative when the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 11, Leye Oyebade, visited him at Governor’s office, Ibadan, averred that the nation’s police will be more effective to address the nation’s security challenges if the technology was the fulcrum of all its crime prevention and combating activities.
He, however, noted that the drive towards technologically driven policing in the country will be only be enhanced if government at all levels increased its funding of the police and retrained its officers.
Ajimobi argued that increased funding will enable the police to acquire modern technological equipment as well as recruit more officers for better policing.

Speaking further, he urged the police to improve on its human relations with the people and embrace community policing, for Nigerians to volunteer the information.
To address current security challenges, he urged Nigerians to give the police benefit of a doubt by providing them critical information in the overall interest of having a safe country.
He reiterated his advocacy for state police noting that a situation where Commissioners of Police had to obtain clearance from the Inspector General of Police rather than governors of the state where the server did not make policing effective enough.
Speaking, Oyebade, accompanied by Oyo Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said the police already had plans to upgrade the technical abilities of its men and had adopted a community policing strategy for the zone.
He said such upgrade was inevitable owing to its inadequate numerical strength to address the nation’s challenges.
Towards stemming cultism, kidnapping and other crimes, in Oyo, Osun and Ondo State, Oyebade said it had identified hotspots using visibility policing strategy.
This is as he said the police planned to retrain its men to stem accidental discharges.
