US: Report what you did last week or resign — Musk orders federal workers

Tesla owner and head of the United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, has directed the country’s federal employees to submit a summary of their work accomplishments from the past week by Monday night or face termination.

The directive, issued via email on Saturday evening, follows an announcement by Musk that noncompliance would be considered a resignation.

Musk had, in a post on X on Saturday, said the announcement was consistent with a directive from President Donald Trump.

He tweeted, “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

The mandate aligns with Trump’s push for more aggressive downsizing of the federal workforce.

Hours before Musk’s post, Trump had written on Truth Social that DOGE should intensify efforts to streamline government operations.

“ELON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET MORE AGGRESSIVE. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAGA!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Federal employees across multiple agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, received emails with the subject line, “What did you do last week?”

The emails, sent from a human resources account at the Office of Personnel Management, instruct employees to provide five bullet points summarizing their work and to copy their managers. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday.

The content reads, “Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager. Please do not send any classified information, links, or attachments.”

Reacting to the development, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) has pledged to challenge any dismissals stemming from the directive.

“Once again, Elon Musk and the Trump administration have shown their utter disdain for federal employees and the critical services they provide to the American people,” said AFGE President Everett Kelley.
