The apex Urhobo socio-cultural organisation, Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), on Wednesday, said it is not in support of secessionists’ agitation but aligns with the unending calls for restructuring of the country to achieve fiscal federalism.
This is just as the union also urged the Federal Government to tackle the insecurity menace in the country headlong.
President-General of UPU, worldwide, Olorogun Moses Ighenerume Taiga, made the clarification as part of the Urhobo Agenda at a World Press Conference in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the union held at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Uvwiamuge-Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The event witnessed the presence of presidents-general of all the Urhobo kingdoms and prominent indigenes across Delta Central Senatorial district and beyond.
Some of the eminent personalities included former Minister of Information and chairman, UPU 90th Anniversary Planning Committee, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Professor G.G Darah, president, UPU, United Kingdom, Chief Ejiro Ughwujabo and Engr. Alex Negin, among others.
Delivering his address laced with achievements, prospects and challenges after rendition of the Urhobo Anthem, Olorogun Taiga, who was flanked by members of his executive, said the Urhobo Agenda also seeks to build alliances with neighbours and other ethnic nationalities in the South-South and beyond for mutual progress.
“The URHOBO AGENDA seeks to build alliances with our neighbours and other ethnic nationalities in the South-South and beyond to work out a new destiny for Nigeria as she totters towards a new beginning.
“To this end, while the URHOBO AGENDA does not support secessionist agitation, it aligns with the call for the restructuring of Nigeria, in line with the tenets of federalism.
“We support the call for the relocation of the headquarters of all oil companies to the Niger Delta.
“We align with the position that election results should be electronically transmitted.
“We support the states’ collection of the Value Added Tax (VAT), the enactment of Anti-Open Grazing Laws, the establishment of State Police, and other such progressive factors that will make Nigeria great,” the Urhobo leader, who enumerated some of the achievements of the union, averred.
While thanking all Deltans, the Delta State government and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for supports rendered UPU and the Urhobo nation, Chief Taiga said drums would be rolled out from November 29 to December 5, 2021, urging all goodwill people to celebrate with the Urhobo people.
Recall that Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), formerly Urhobo Brotherly Society and Urhobo Progressive Union, was founded on November 3, 1931 by the trio of Chief Omorohwovo Okoro, Chief Mukoro Mowoe and Chief Thomas Erukeme.
