UPDATED: 18 lawmakers impeach Ogun Speaker, Oluomo

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, was on Tuesday, impeached by 18 lawmakers of the Assembly.

 

The impeachment process was carried out by the lawmakers during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bolanle Ajayi.

 

They immediately elected Hon. Daisi Elemide, representing Odeda State Constituency, as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

 

The motion for his impeachment was moved by a member from Yewa North 1 State Constituency, Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju and was seconded by a member representing Sagamu 11 State Constituency, Hon. Ademola Adeniran.

 

It was gathered that Adeyanju entered the Hallowed Chamber with the Maze in company of other lawmakers.

 

The erstwhile Speaker was accused of alleged financial misappropriation; inciting members against themselves; high-handedness; lack of focus and transparency and arrogance and poor leadership.

 

In the notice of impeachment, the lawmakers said their action was “sequel to the gross misconduct mentioned and in consonance with section 92 (2)(c) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Order 11 of the Standing rule of the House of Assembly.

 

“We the undersigned duly elected members of the 10th Assembly of Ogun State House of Assembly move for the impeachment of Mr. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo with immediate effect.

 

Those who signed the impeachment notice included the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi; Adeyanju Adegoke; Akingbade Jemili; Lawal Samusideen; Ayodele Wenu; Lamidi Musefiu; Awolaja Dickson.

 

Others were Adeniran Ademola; Elemide Oludaisi; Bello Damilare; Adesanya Oluseun; Atobatele Lukmon; Owode Waliu; Amosun Yusuf; Babatunde Tella; Soneye Damilola; Adeleye Lukman and Kashamu Rasheed.

 

While speaking with newsmen after his emergence as the new Speaker, Elemide, urged the people of the State to expect the best from him.

 

He said, “We are law abiding legislators. We want the world to know that there has been changed in leadership.

 

” 18 members signed for me to be the speaker. People should remain calm. We are in custody of all the authority of the house. We are saying that the new leadership will support the governor.

 

” The governor does not know anything about this impeachment,” he said.

 

One of the lawmakers, Hon. Damilola Soneye, from Obafemi Owode State Constituency, told newsmen that the office of the speaker is to be first among equals.

 

Soneye added, ” The speaker was impeached due to gross misconduct, which bothers on high handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance and poor leadership style, financial misappropriation and inciting members against themselves,” he said.

 

Assembly officials which included   the Clerk and the  Deputy Clerk, Mr Deji Adeyemo and Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi respectively were in attendance during the plenary.

 

At the time of filing this report, there was heavy security presence within the Assembly Complex.
