UPDATE: Unknown gunmen kill OAU professor in Edo

Unknown gunmen on Friday allegedly shot dead the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Professor Jerome Elusiyan in Edo State.

Though details surrounding the gruesome killing were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, Tribune Online authoritatively gathered the don was travelling between Ekpoma and Benin alongside his driver when he was allegedly attacked by gunmen.

The don was shot dead during the attack while his driver sustained gunshot injuries.

When Tribune Online visited the residence of the deceased located at Oranfe area of Ile-Ife, the whole compound wore a mournful look as sympathisers thronged in to condole with the family.

Frantic efforts made to have a chat with the wife of the slain professor over the sad occurrence were unsuccessful as she said she was not in the right frame of mind to make any comment.

One of the sympathisers, who pleaded anonymity described the deceased as a philanthropist, who helped so many indigent undergraduates to pay their tuition fees at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

However, a condolence register had been open for Professor Elusiyan at Department of Paediatrics of the OAUTHC where he worked until his gruesome death.

Meanwhile, a credible source informed our correspondent that his corpse was being conveyed from Benin to Ile-Ife ahead of his yet-to-be fixed burial.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of OAUTHC, Mrs Kemi Fasoto confirmed the incident, saying “it is true that Professor Elusiyan was killed by gunmen in Edo State.”
