UPDATE: Bomb explosions rock Maiduguri, Yobe

Published by

Bomb explosions were heard at the dawn of Saturday in two major towns of North-East Nigeria in Borno State and Yobe State, as eligible voters looked forward to the Presidential and Parliamentary election.

Cases were reported in Maiduguri, Borno State, and Geidam, Yobe State as apprehension gripped the citizens of the towns.

Tribune Online gathered  from a source at  1000 housing Estate nearby Jimtilo in Maiduguri that the explosives sounded like artillery fire coming from foot soldiers testing their weapons. Another source added that there were up to 10 blasts.

“We heard up to 10 blasts when we went out to the mosque for the morning prayer but the Imam insisted we conclude the prayer and wait for a proactive response from the security services.

“We feared they could be suicide bombers who might infiltrate the city just before the election knowing that this is one of the days people gather in crowded areas to vote,” said a civilian Joint Task Force, (JTF) source.

Others, however, said it was the military testing their fire power in readiness for the election.

Similar attacks were equally heard in neighbouring Geidam, Yobe State

No case of casualties on both sides was reported yet.

Meanwhile,  a  surveillance helicopter has been hovering the different suburbs of  Maiduguri to assure voters of security presence.
