Pandemonium broke at 21 Ojekunle Street, Ladipo area of Mushin on Tuesday as a gas explosion rocked the neighbourhood, killing a 10-year-old boy and four others, leaving others residents injured.
The number of the injured is yet to be ascertained as of press time.
According to eyewitnesses, 3 males and one female (mama Funmi) were recovered dead in the incident.
It was also gathered that the only infant rescued alive died before getting to the hospital.
The area has been cordoned off to allow ease of rescue operations.
Both National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye confirmed the incident.
NEMA spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, said that four adults – 3 males and one female (mama Funmi) and were recovered dead.
He said the incident occurred at the LPG domestic retailing Centre located at Ojekunle Street, Ladipo Spare Part market.
According to him, the agency was assisted in the recovery of bodies and injured victims by a number of other agencies which included the State Fire Service, Police Disaster Management Unit, NEMA and LASEMA.
According to the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, the agency is currently attending to the gas explosion.
She stated that the gas incident was reported at 08:42 hours Tuesday morning via the state emergency reporting platform and was swiftly responded to by a combination of the state first and secondary responders.
On arrival at the scene, she explained in a statement that it was discovered that “it is an open space used for several activities including a beer parlour, mechanic workshop, spare parts sale and gas shop amongst others while housing a makeshift structure.”
“Three male adults had been recovered as rescue and recovery operations continue in an environment isolated from causing any further secondary incident,” she said.
She did not mention whether the three adults recovered still alive or dead.
According to her, preliminary investigations to establish the fact of the incident has continued, adding that further discovery will be made public.
