Unizik new VC assumes duty, promises to give school new look

The newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof. Charles Esimone has assumed duty with a promise to reposition the institution to Global standard.

Esimone, a professor of Pharmacology and Ex-Deputy VC, Administration of the University who spoke during his inauguration on Monday at the University auditorium said: “This is the beginning of a new dawn. I am going to work with you to make Unizik the greatest institution in Nigeria.

He said ‘I can’t do it alone. I need everybody’s support for the interest of our children’.

He promised that before the end of his administration the university will have a new look of; A world class Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre, construction of more classrooms for students comfort, construction of staff quarters to enable them to live within the school community, training and retraining of lecturers, repositioning of the school library, among other infrastructural development.

He added that there would also be the provision of suggestion boxes in strategic places across the school in order to allow members of staff to drop their suggestions, which he promised to work on when the need arises.

But I can’t do it alone. I need everybody’s support for the dream to be actualised, he pleaded.

He noted that any lecturer who performed below standard would be shown the way out of the university.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Esimone said that the passion he has for the job is such that he was already running for Unizik to be among the best in the World.

The immediate past VC, Professor Joseph Ahaneku, however, in his handover speech, said: Unizik, truly is a citadel of academic excellence that must be let out of its present development challenges.

“I, therefore, call on all stakeholders in the university project to join hands with the New VC in the task of putting it back on the front row of academic excellence.

He, therefore, charged him to maintain the already build the confidence of the institution.

He also expressed optimism that the new headman, would show leadership and brace up to the developmental and academic challenges of the institution.
