University of Jos joins ASUU strike

ACADEMIC activities at the University of Jos have been paralysed following directive by the University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to join the strike declared by its national body.

The University could not join the strike on Monday as a result of the first semester examinations which ended on Tuesday.

Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos Branch, Dr Chris Piwuna who gave directive on Wednesday said the institution will proceed on strike following a directive by the national body adding that the indefinite and comprehensive strike is as result of unresolved issues in the 2009 agreement between Federal Government and the Union.

Dr Piwuna in a press statement issued in Jos urged the academic staff not to conduct or supervise the ongoing first semester examination at any level.

“Sequel to the declaration of a Nationwide strike by the National Executive Council of ASUU over outstanding issues in the 2009 Federal Government and ASUU agreement, we write to formerly inform you of the action.

“At the congress meeting of our branch which held on the 15 August, 2017, congress resolved to commence a total, indefinite and comprehensive strike from 12 midnight on 16 August, 2017.”

Dr Piwuna said no member is allow to participate in teaching or attend any statutory meeting: Departmental, Faculty Board, Senate, congregation or council. No member should be involved in conducting or supervising any examination at any level or supervision of project or theses at any level.
