Uniosun 15th matriculation: VC warns students against cultism, drug abuse, other vices

The Vice-chancellor of the Osun State University, Professor Odúnayo Clement Adebooye, on Thursday, charged the newly admitted students of the institution to shun any act of drug abuse, cultism, examination malpractice that could lead to their summary dismissal.

The Vice-chancellor who made the charge in his speech at the 15th matriculation ceremony of the University,
also warned them against thuggery, truancy and sexual harassment as they resume for the new academic session.

According to him, “Students who are found guilty of any of these offences would face sanctions which may include summary dismissal.

“You’re advised to get a copy of the University Policy on sexual harassment to equip yourself with knowledge on those acts that constitute sexual harassment in this institution.

“We are proud to state that our academic calendar is as reliable as an old wheel-horse. We are a public institution and we respect our contract with you and that is why we don’t turn a 4-year course into 7-year course.

“We are widely renowned for the consistency and strict adherence to our academic calendar. Even when COVID-19 disrupted the academic calendars of most Universities in 2020, our University was on track and we were able to complete the academic session by employing the virtual approach to learning and assessment.

“We will continue to keep and respect our own part of the bargain. Your own part of the bargain is to read your books, do your assignments, pass your practicals and exams and graduate on time.

“Through our Entrepreneurship Centre, we have mandated the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills for every student in an attempt to turn our graduates into employers of labour upon graduation rather than job seekers.

“At UNIOSUN, we give out two certificates upon graduation, one being a certificate for completion of course of study, and the other being a certificate of competence for chosen vocation.

“To aid our students in becoming self-reliant after graduation, the University supports her Alumni who have bankable proposals with the sum of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) as start-up loan, repayable over a period of five years with just 1 per cent interest. We are linking up with some financial institutions to expand the scope of this programme.”

“The world has gone digital with every trace of analogue being relegated to the rear, and UNIOSUN has embraced digitization in its entirety. Last year, through our Digital Innovation and Business Start-up Hub (DIBUSH), we partnered with Opolo Global Innovations Limited to periodically train our staff and students on digital skills. We will expand the scope this year by the grace of God. It is our wish to convert 50-60% of our curricula and examination to virtual delivery. We can do it, by the grace of God.

“It is also worthy of note to mention that the tree planting campaign for fresh students is still in practice. Fresh students are expected to plant tree seedlings during matriculation and nurture them till convocation. It helps in greening the University environment and serves as a souvenir to the University after your graduation. The Works Department would get in touch with you to guide you on how to go about planting your trees.

“It is important I let you know that it is in your best interest to project this University positively in social media. Use your WhatsApp, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc wisely,” he concluded.
