The University of Maiduguri has appointed Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele as its substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment, announced on Wednesday in a statement by the university’s Governing Council and signed by the registrar Ahmad Lawan, follows a rigorous selection process.
The statement noted the appointment takes immediate effect.
Describing the appointment as well-deserved, the university’s Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, said: “Professor Mele’s exceptional scholarship and leadership have earned him this coveted role.”
A renowned scholar in English Language and Linguistics, Professor Mele brings over two decades of experience in teaching, research and community service to his new role. He had previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Central Administration) at the university.
Under his leadership, the university is expected to witness significant improvements in research, innovation, student experience and community engagement.
Professor Mele, a native of Mafa Local Government Area in Borno State, is married with children.
He is widely travelled and has a passion for reading, mentoring young professionals and charity work.
