Unilorin alumni association fetes 16 first-class graduates, 23 distinguished alumni

The University of Ilorin Alumni Association has celebrated this year’s 16 best-graduating students of the university at its maiden award and honours ceremony.

Also, 23 past alumni of the university, including the special assistant (media) to Lagos state governor, Gboyega Rasaq Akoshile, and the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Wahab Egbewole, were honoured.

Speaking during the event, the national president of the association, Professor Abdulrazaq Kilani, said that the event was also organised to remind the alumni of the need to give back to their alma mater.

“We are honouring some of our valued alumni today because of their contributions to society with a view to reminding them that Unilorin is proud of their accomplishments. Unilorin is monitoring your progress and the giant strides you are making, and to remind you that it is time to give back to our Alma mater as valued alumni,” he said.

Kilani announced plans by the association to embark on three projects, namely, the re-modelling of the alumni secretariat, the construction of a male hostel to complement the existing one, and an alumni guest house that will also provide accommodation to visitors to the school.

Also speaking with journalists, Akoshile urged the new graduating students to leverage the digital skills they acquired while in school to make a difference in their various fields of endeavours in the near future.

He also charged the graduating students to face challenges with doggedness, saying, “They are more intelligent than us because we weathered our own era with analogue intelligence, but the graduating students were opportune to face it with digital and computerised technologies. They have no excuse not to excel in life.”.

Akosile promised to do more for his association and alma mater, saying that “we won’t forget UNILORIN because without it, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”.

Egbewole, on his part, charged the honoured alumni and the new graduates to harness the best opportunities available in their various disciplines to make their alma mater greater.
