A member of staff of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Sunday Gbenga Meshioye, reportedly killed himself on Tuesday by consuming a substance the hospital considered to be pesticide, snipper.
Meshioye, a driver and supervisor attached to the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, at the time of his death, was being investigated by the school authority over a vehicle in his custody that got burnt.
The Principal Assistant Registrar, Communication Unit of the university, Mrs Taiwo Oloyede, confirmed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday.
According to her, the deceased, who was living in the school quarters was said to have rushed to the university’s Medical Centre for first aid treatment before being conveyed in an ambulance to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba for further attention.
Unfortunately, he could not survive the incident.
Mrs Oloyede said the deceased appeared before a Panel of Inquiry set up in accordance with the extant rules of the university to investigate the cause of the fire that gutted the bus in his custody.
“And it is painful that he took the decision to end his life that same day even when the panel was yet to conclude their investigation,” she added.
She said the university is grieved over the death and that his body has been deposited at the mortuary.
