THE University of Lagos will next week graduate a total of 12,617 students at its 49th convocation.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Rahamon Bello, made this known at a press conference held at Senate Chamber on Wednesday.
Two female students, Taiwo Bankole from Cell Biology Department and Oyindamola Omotuyi, from Systems Engineering, will graduate with the “perfect grade” of 5.0 CGPA.
Together the best graduating students will become the second to achieve this feat, after Mr Ayodele Dada, a graduate of Psychology, who, last year became the first person to do so in the 54-year-old university.
A further analysis of the results shows that out of the total number of graduates, 6, 900 (representing 54.7 per cent) will receive first degrees or diploma, while 5, 717 (45.3 per cent) will receive postgraduate degrees.
Bello also announced that out of the first degree graduates, a total of 231 students would bag First Class Degrees, with the Faculty of Engineering producing the highest number, 46. Also, 1, 705 will graduate in the Second Class Upper Division, while 2,972 will be awarded Second Class Lower Degrees. Furthermore, 1372 will graduate with Third Class, 103 with Pass, and 517 with unclassified degrees or diplomas.
The ceremonies will begin with a convocation lecture which will be delivered on Monday, January 23, by the former Ekiti State Governor and Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Kayode Fayemi. First degrees will be awarded on Tuesday and Wednesday, while postgraduate degrees and honorary awards will be presented on Thursday. Celebrated poet, JP Clark, is among three Nigerians who will receive honorary doctorate degrees during the ceremonies.
The Vice Chancellor also announced the renaming of six monuments on campus after former Vice Chancellors, “for their contributions to the growth of the university to its enviable position.”
While the main auditorium would be called JF Ade Ajayi Auditorium, the Second Access Road will be named Akinpelu Adesola Road. The Radiography Hostel will be called Kwaku Adadevoh Hostel; the Multipurpose Halls, Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall; DLI Auditorium, Nurudeen Alao Auditorium; and the Staff School, Tolulope Odugbemi Hall.
