ABOUT 1,000 patients are to be given free medical treatments in the maiden medical mission of the National Council of Nigeria Muslim Organisations (NCNMO), United States of America, in collaboration with the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates Association (UNIFEMGA), in Ile-Ife (Osun State) and its environs between tomorrow (Saturday) and Tuesday.
A statement from the organisers signed by Abdulfattah Olanlege (UNIFEMGA) and Dr Musodiq Bello (NCNMO) stated that the programme had commenced on March 30 with eye screening for over 220 patients in preparation for 45 cataract surgeries during the next period.
According to the statement, a five-member NCNMO team led by Dr Fatai Ilupeju, an anesthesiologist in Westwood, Massachusetts affiliated with Boston Medical Centre, will work alongside UNIFEMGA team led by Professor Akeem Lasisi, a consultant otolaryngologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and Chief Medical Director, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo and other volunteers will provide free medical services to people in Ile- Ife and its environs.
The mission will be declared open at OAU health centre by the vice chancellor, Professor Eyitayo Ogunbodede, with speeches from Alhaji Waheed Odeyimka, UNIFEMGA National President and Professor Abubakar Sanusi, a medical doctor and Imam of OAU Mosque.
Other expected guests are Senior Special Adviser to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa and chairman of the Board of Trustees of UNIFEMGA, Alhaji Rafiu Ebiti.
Other highlights of the programme are health talks, cataract surgeries, dental clinics and general medical check-up.
The medical mission is a product of an understanding between the NCNMO and UNIFEMGA during 2018 reunion of UNIFEMGA in Ile-Ife where Dabiri-Erewa gave the keynote address.
NCNMO is a council of 28 Nigerian Muslim organisations, while UNIFEMGA is the body of Muslim graduates from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
