The Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has reiterated that it will continue to support the States of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Plateau in ensuring that children and women get the desired attention required for existence.

The assertion was made by the Officer in Charge of the Bauchi Field Office, Drto do Clement Adams, during the opening of a 3-day 2023 end-of-year review and 2024 planning meeting held at the Emerald Hotels, Gombe, on Monday.

The meeting was to discuss achievements recorded, key challenges, and actions required to address the challenges in different sectors of the North-East zone.

The meeting was also to develop and discuss draft activities for the 2024 work plan.

Clement Adams also stressed that the essence of the meeting was to reflect on what was done during the year in terms of successes recorded as well as challenges and gaps, with the aim of doing things differently to achieve better results for the following year.

According to him, “This meeting is covering all five states under the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, which include Bauchi, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, and Plateau.”

He added that, “In this meeting, we are looking at what we have been doing and planning for next year. We also want to see where we recorded successes, what contributed to them, and where we need to make improvements.”

Clement Adams further said, “There can be no success achieved if there is no adequate planning, and that is what we have come here to do today. So we will be making contributions and suggestions so that we can do things differently next year.”

In her address during the meeting, the Gombe State Commissioner of Education, Hajiya Aishatu Maigari, said that the meeting was timely considering the fact that it will chart a way forward for more achievements to be made in all the critical sectors of the states represented at the meeting.

She commended UNICEF for all the interventions it has made in the education sector, particularly in the areas of safe schools, training of education officers, and the development of sector plans by state governments.

The Commissioner expressed happiness that, as it is now, every child in Gombe State has access to quality and efficient basic education through the various interventions of UNICEF in that direction.

She, however, said, “As Oliver Twist, we want to ask for more from UNICEF, and we will continue to strengthen the partnership between us for the good of all the children of Gombe State.”

In brief remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asmau Iganus, commended UNICEF for all the support for women and children in the state, stressing that the state has benefited immensely from the various interventions.

She also asked for more interventions from UNICEF to better the lot of women and children in Gombe State, assuring that 2024 will be better.

North-East and North-West regions are bedevilled by challenges that include issues of out-of-school children, maternal and infant mortality, and insecurity, among other challenges.
