UNICEF donates SCBU unit to Sokoto specialist hospital

As part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality and infants at birth, the United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) has handed over newly equipped with state-of-the-art facilities Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) to the Sokoto State government.

Speaking after the handing over of the unit at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, on Tuesday, the Country Representative of UNICEF, Ms Cristian Munduate, said the unit will address the issue child mortality in the state .

She said the unit is meant to care for children born with ailment or with low weight due to their mother’s lack of nutrition or with any infection at birth.

She said, “This unit will care for children born with ailments or with any infection. It is also meant to cater for children born with low weight as you can see here.

“The unit is provided with high technology equipment which is exclusively for newborn children who needs immediate medical attention in incubators.

“It will also serve as respiratory response for those who can not make it on their own to survive ”

She however expressed her satisfaction with the preparedness of the hospital in ensuring that their staffs have already been trained to handle the equipment for optimum use.

Speaking in her remarks, the state Commissioner for Health, Hajia Balarabe Asabe, commend UNICEF for the donation of the SCBU unit.

She explained that the ministry under her supervision will continue to give maximum supports to all the programs of UNICEF in the state while assured that she will ensure proper use of the units to achieve its benefits.
