UNICAL mathematics department gutted by fire

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University Of Calabar (UNICAL), was on Saturday night gutted by fire.

Though no casualty was recorded during the night inferno, eyewitness said “the cause of the fire is still unknown, as the incident occurred in the night hours of Saturday”.

The fire incident led to the destruction of major offices in the department, as well as the burning of some valuables like tables, documents, air conditioners appliances, amongst other office equipment.

Eyewitnesses also disclosed that “it wasn’t long as the incident occurred that the Student Union leaders reached out to members of the state fire service who mobilised swiftly to the scene and put out the fire”.

One of the students, who witnessed the incident, and identified as Ogar Maxwell, said ”The fire started in the night. No body knows the cause actually for now, because I can’t tell you what I’m not sure of. But there’s no casualty from the fire. It simply burnt the department”.

The university management is yet to comment on the incident as at the time of this report.
