THE Ugbowo campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of a student who allegedly committed suicide after jumping down from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, a four-storey building.

The student was said to be a student of the Department of Actuarial Science, Faculty of Management Sciences.

It was, however, not clear if the deceased, a student of the Department of Actuarial Science, who jumped to his death on Sunday left behind a suicide note, but some account revealed that he was pushed down and died on the spot.

It was also learnt that the deceased was supposed to have graduated had an extra year because he failed some courses.

In a statement in Benin on Tuesday by the institution’s spokesman, Mr Michael Osasuyi, he confirmed the tragedy, noting that investigation was ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

“The information we had was that a spillover student fell from upstairs. In any case, it’s so pathetic that this kind of incident happened.

“We have contacted his family and the security have commenced an investigation into the incident to unravel if it was a case of suicide or otherwise,” Osasuyi said.

It will be recalled that a 21-year-old student of the University, Christabel Buoro, also committed suicide, allegedly over a failed love affair.

The lifeless body of the 300-level student of Medical Laboratory Science was discovered four weeks ago at her hostel located on Plot 4 Uwaifo Lane, off Newton Street, Ekosodin, a sprawling students’ community behind the main campus of the university after she was alleged to have consumed the popular insecticide ‘sniper’ with a bottle of soft drink
