UNESCO-IACIU calls for empowerment of local communities

The UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding (IACIU) has vowed to empower local communities in the country through education and cultural diversity engagement.

The institute believes that empowerment will enhance cultural appreciation and inclusivity.

Director of the institute, Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, who disclosed this at a workshop organised by the IACIU in Abeokuta, Ogun State, stressed the need for Nigeria to embrace cultural diversity for national development.

The IACIU is a category 2 UNESCO institute saddled with the task of promoting, propagating and protecting the diversity of cultural expressions in line with the principles and ideals of the organisation’s 2005 Convention.

Addressing the participants, who were drawn from educational institutions, cultural organisations and the public, Okebukola emphasised the need for the government to create a suitable environment where cultural diversity thrives.

Speaking on the theme, “Cultivate & Connect: Empowering Communities through Education and Cultural Diversity Engagement,” the former NUC scribe spoke on the theme said: “The importance of creating a suitable environment where cultural diversity thrives cannot be overemphasised.

“The IACIU is committed to empowering local communities through education and cultural diversity engagement which will enhance cultural appreciation and inclusivity.”

The director noted that the workshop is a testament to the institute’s unwavering and strong commitment to nurturing talents and preserving cultural heritage.

Participants at the workshop were engaged in dynamic discussions and interactive sessions designed to highlight societal benefits of embracing cultural diversity.

The convener, Musa Ogunsola, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping a more inclusive and culturally aware future, while also admonishing the relevant authorities in the educational sectors to take actionable steps toward inclusivity.
