UNDP tours active erosion sites in Anambra

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) delegation has toured some active erosion sites in Anambra State where they assured to help with immediate intervention.

Members of the team were accompanied on the tour by the State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu, and other senior members of the Ministry.

The visited sites include the College of Nursing Science, Nkpor-Umuoji, Nnobi-Umuoji, Akuzor Nkpor-Agu and Umuezena village and Obeleagu village Umudim Nnewi erosion sites.

The Anambra State UNDP focal person, Chinwetalu Okosi, revealed that the erosion problem will be looked into as soon as possible, and pledged UNDP’s commitment to fighting climate change-related issues in Anambra State.

She called for an urgent attitudinal change towards the environment and used the opportunity to also call on town planners, developers and contractors of road and housing projects to always have sustainability in mind in their designs.

The Environment Commissioner, on his part, restated the existence of one thousand active erosion sites in over one hundred and sixty communities out of the one hundred and eighty-one communities in the State.

According to him, over forty percent of the State land mass is threatened by erosion menace, including farmlands and countless properties, and expressed the State government’s commitment to continue to forge partnerships with relevant organizations in order to attract foreign support to help tackle the enormous environmental challenges, which the State has been facing since creation.
