UN peacekeepers express concern over security situation in Lebanon

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Wednesday said it was concerned about the security situation in the country.

“We are deeply concerned about the possibility of escalation,” UNIFIL deputy spokesperson Kandice Ardiel told dpa.

“This could have devastating consequences for people on both sides of the border,” she added.

The UN mission called on all parties to cease their fire and urged restraint.

The deputy head of Hamas’ political bureau, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in an explosion in Lebanon’s capital Beirut on Tuesday evening.

The terrorist organisation immediately blamed Israel, While Israel’s military declined to comment on reports of a targeted killing, the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon announced that this “crime will not pass without an answer or punishment.’’

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been monitoring the border area between Israel and Lebanon since 1978.
