Ul turns out 314 First Class graduates, celebrates 75th Founder Day

The University of Ibadan, on Tuesday, held its 2023 convocation ceremony, where 6,865 graduated, and 314 bagging First Class degree.

Speaking during the ceremony, the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Kayode Adebowale, hinted that the event is part of the activities marking the 75th Foundation Day celebration of the university, which was held at the International Conference Centre.

He stated further that the graduates, who were all from the 17 faculties and Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the institution as well as other affiliated institutions, also had 1,519 emerging with second class upper division, 3,665 with second class lower division and the rest below the other grades.

According to him, the event which was the day one of the convocation ceremonies witnessed the graduation of graduands from the Faculties of Arts, Sciences, Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Public Health and Dentistry.

Speaking about the university, he said “despite the attendant challenges that have trailed academic and administrative activities in 2023 up to this point, the university has recorded notable degrees of accomplishments.” Congratulating

the graduands for the successful completion of the academic journey in the institution, he also lauded their parents and guardians for their support towards the feat.

He, therefore, charged the graduates to embrace character and learning as the two wings with which graduates of the university fly.

The commencement speaker at the event, chairman of the Abib Olamitoye Group, Dr Abib Olamitoye, who inspired the graduands with the story of his life and business successes, tasked them to be determined on what they want to do in life, saying “write an essay on what you want to become in life after today and be determined; small ambition is as bad as no ambition in life.” He advised them not to desist from reading books of those who had achieved success in life especially in the areas of their aspirations.

“When you were in school, you read books to success, even after school, you will still need to read another set of books on how to succeed in life. Read on businesses, saving and motivation. Be methodological, strategic and progressive in orientation,” he noted.

While admonishing them to be top performers in life, he charged them to learn to give not only to themselves, but also to their families, parents and their alma mater.

The overall best graduating student at the 2023 convocation is Ayo Daphine-Adeola from the Faculty of Arts, Department of Classics (Greek and Latin).
