A 44-year-old inmate has been arrested on suspicion of murdering fellow prisoner John Mansfield at HMP Whitemoor, a high-security facility in Cambridgeshire.
The incident occurred on Sunday and marks the latest in a series of violent events within the UK prison system.
John Mansfield, 63, was found dead at the prison around 4:10 p.m., according to Cambridgeshire Police.
He was serving a life sentence for the 2006 murder of his neighbour, 63-year-old Ann Alfanso, whom he stabbed around 20 times in the head and neck. Mansfield was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison.

In 2014, he received a second life sentence after stabbing another inmate with a broken plate at HMP Full Sutton.
Sky News reports that Mansfield was attacked by another prisoner at Whitemoor, which houses inmates serving some of the longest sentences in the country. Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
The death comes amid heightened concerns over prison safety following a separate violent incident at HMP Frankland in County Durham over the weekend.
Hashem Abedi, the brother of Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi, allegedly assaulted three officers by throwing hot oil at them and stabbing them with improvised knives, reportedly fashioned from a baking tray.
The Ministry of Justice has announced a review following that attack. Meanwhile, the Prison Officers Association has raised alarm over a growing pattern of violence and security lapses across the prison estate.
Earlier this month, three other inmates at HMP Whitemoor—also serving life sentences—were given additional time for assaulting a prison officer in August 2023.
HMP Whitemoor holds around 458 adult male inmates, primarily high-risk individuals serving extended or life sentences.
