The UK Government has donated advanced counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) equipment to Nigeria’s Operation Hadin Kai Theatre (OPHK) Command Joint Task Force in Maiduguri, bolstering efforts against terrorism in the Northeast.
The equipment handover, attended by senior Nigerian Army officers, highlights the continuing partnership between the UK and Nigeria.
The UK Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Matt Lynch, reiterated the UK’s commitment to Nigeria’s military, particularly in countering violent extremism.
Lynch described the donation as a collection of highly technical, non-lethal tools designed to counter IED ambushes, saying, “Our training team is working alongside the Nigerian Joint Task Force Northeast to enhance critical skills needed to counter violent extremism here.”
The donated equipment includes specialised IED detectors and tools aimed at identifying and safely neutralising explosive threats.
Brigadier General Abdulrazak Kazeem, Commander of the 47 Engineer Brigade, called the donation “timely,” given recent developments in counter-IED operations.
“This equipment arrives at a crucial moment, allowing us to enhance our proactive approach in detecting and neutralising threats in the field,” Kazeem noted.
He emphasised that the tools would aid in pinpointing IED manufacturing areas and intercepting bomb makers, which is central to the Nigerian Army’s strategy.
The Theatre Commander, Major General Waidi Shuaibu, expressed gratitude for the UK’s ongoing support. He highlighted that the initiatives include both training for Nigerian Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams and the establishment of a Counter-IED Coordination Cell within the 47 Engineer Brigade.
Shuaibu remarked, “These initiatives, along with previous assistance, clearly demonstrate their commitment to fully neutralising IED threats in the theatre.
“This support significantly contributes to our mandate in Operation Hadin Kai as we work towards restoring normalcy in the Northeast.”
Shuaibu also extended his appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the Service Chiefs for their guidance and strategic support in enhancing OPHK’s operational capabilities.
