UK-based man cancels engagement over N3.5m bride price demand

Published by

A UK-based Nigerian man has called off his engagement after receiving a bride price list totaling N3.5 million from the family of his fiancée in Nigeria.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was reportedly shocked by the demands and expressed his frustration during a conversation with social media influencer, Princess Adeola, who later shared the story on her platform.

According to Adeola, the man had sought her advice on his long-distance relationship, which he had committed to despite the challenges of trust and distance.

“There’s this guy on my platform that met a lady here in Nigeria, he’s in the UK. You know how it’s difficult trusting or committing to a long-distance relationship these days, but against all odds, this man was committed to this lady. They’re both in love, and when he asked for my advice, I told him to go all for it,” she wrote.

However, the man’s commitment took a hit when he was presented with the exorbitant bride price list, which his fiancée reportedly supported, citing the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

“Yesterday he reached out to me and was not happy with the bride price list her people gave him—a list of 3.5 million. We spoke at length, and it was not a palatable discussion. I tried to calm him down, but his pain was that the woman he wants to marry is also in support of her people, saying things are very expensive in Nigeria,” Adeola explained.

She further noted the man’s disappointment, saying, “Why would anyone ask for all these just to marry a woman? Won’t the man end up treating her like he likes? You basically sold your child. It’s very ridiculous, and I hope women learn from this.”

The man reportedly had plans to take his fiancée abroad and sponsor her education but decided to end the relationship, citing greed as the reason.

“Now you have lost a good man because of greed. Uncle said he’s no longer interested. Ladies, please learn to talk to your parents when they ask your husbands for ridiculous bride prices,” Adeola concluded.
