UITH-NANNM urges Senate to push better welfare bill for nurses, midwives

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) chapter, has requested the senator representing Kwara Central senatorial district, Mallam Saliu Mustapha, to champion a bill aimed at promoting better welfare packages to counter the trend of brain drain among nurses in the country.

The association also urged the lawmaker to support the training of youths, ensuring their certification in basic life support skills.

NANNM-UITH chapter chairman, Nurse Ayinla Kazeem, addressed the association’s concerns when he led other executive members on a courtesy call to the senator recently.

Kazeem acknowledged Turaki’s previous donation to the UITH’s School of Nursing and encouraged him to further support nurses by advocating for “nurses’ friendly initiatives and bills” to curb the brain drain trend in Nigeria.

The association emphasised the necessity for all levels of government to “focus on equipping schools and facilities with automated electronic defibrillators (AEDs) to educate and empower our community with essential first aid skills.”

“We also wish to take this opportunity to call on the government at all levels to ensure that nurses and midwives are not marginalised in the primary health care sector, particularly in policy and decision-making roles,” he added.

In response, the senator commended the commitment of nurses to the well-being of the nation, their dedication to their roles, and their close engagement with patients compared to other health professionals.

Mustapha expressed his willingness to support the association’s commendable ideas and programmes, as he has done for many people in the past and continues to do.

He encouraged them to leverage their strategic position to ensure quality and safe healthcare delivery for everyone under their care.

However, he informed the association’s leadership that the current government’s focus is on ensuring universal health coverage through functional primary healthcare systems.
