STUDENTS resident in the Alexander Brown Hall of the University of Ibadan has been ordered to vacate the facility not later than
12 noon today (
Saturday, April 7, 2018) over agitations following the increment in professional training and accommodation fees.
A notice of closure issued by the registrar, Mr O. I. Olukoya, following a meeting of the Academic Board of the institution’s College of Medicine on Friday, said the decision was taken in view of the security implications of the students’ action.
“In view of the security threat that the students’ action may pose, the board, therefore, recommended an immediate closure of the Alexander Brown Hall until further notice with a review of the situation in two weeks,” it stated.
It then directed students “to vacate the Hall on or before 12noon of Saturday, 7 April 2018.”
Students of the university had on on Thursday embarked on a protest against increment in their accommodation fees from N14,000 to N30,000.
Medical students are, however, expected to pay N40, 000.
On Thursday morning, students were said to have locked some halls’ gates to express their displeasure.
A stakeholders’ meeting to be presided over by the vice-chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, has been fixed for next Tuesday to deliberate over the development.
The meeting is expected to have in attendance members of the university management, students, alumni partners and other stakeholders.
