THE Postgraduate School of the University of Ibadan has been upgraded to a Postgraduate College, and will be headed by a provost.

This was disclosed by the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, while addressing a world press conference on the 70th anniversary of the university in his office.

Professor Olayinka said the council decided to upgrade the school in order to increase its productivity level, noting that the school has so far done well but, “we want it to deliver more”

The new college, according to the vice chancellor, will be headed by a provost, assisted by two deputy provosts; and will have two deputy registrars, thereby possessing necessary human resources to make it deliver optimally.

The decision to upgrade the school may not be unconnected with the desire of the university to concentrate more on postgraduate studies, producing sound academics for younger universities in the country.

With over 400 professors, the highest in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan turns out the highest number of doctoral degree holders in Africa every year.

It plans to have undergraduate-postgraduate students’ ratio of 4:6.
