New physiotherapy inductees at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor A. I Olayinka has told new inductees into the Physiotherapy profession from the university that the best of patient care was expected from them as they join the profession.
Olayinka, who gave the charge at the induction ceremony of the 2015/2016 graduands of the Ibadan College of Medicine, said the oath they took into the profession demands that emphasis be placed on patient care rather than money.
The Vice Chancellor, represented by his deputy Vice Chancellor(Admin), Professor Emilolorun Ayelari declared that as ambassadors of the university, “particularly in practice, abide by the role of the profession, be kind and humble.”
Induction lecturer and associate professor of management, Moshood Abiola University, Dr Ade Adeagbo told the inductees that globalisation and technology was changing the practice of medicine, including physiotherapy practice.
“You need to start to think about this because even the role of physiotherapy will also change. The patient in the next 20 years is internet savvy and will ask questions. So challenge yourself about the way you think about physiotherapy practice and be creative using technology,” he declared.
Head of Physiotherapy department, Professor Kolapo Hamzat assured that the role of the physiotherapy inductees was indispensable in a country where road traffic accidents and injury cases are on the rise, where 15million people suffer a stroke every year and 60 cases of developmental delays in every 1000 birth in Lagos.
Hamzat, who proudly said any of the inductees could be his personal physiotherapists, however, asked for donation towards procuring and updating the department’s training equipment.
He also charged them to remain steadfast in great morals, thoughts and deeds; continue to learn; honourable even when they can afford to be otherwise; and make history and good name for themselves.
Registrar, Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria, Mrs Olufunke Akanle accepting them into the profession, stated that UI had maintained an enviable standard in the churned out of trained, certified and reliable graduands despite its many challenges.
Akanle, who implore that the institution ensure the implementation of the accreditation team’s recommendations for physiotherapy training, urged the inductees to respect the oath of the profession, be focused, considerate and sympathetic to their patients.
