Ughelli South chairman, engineers visit Okuama ahead reconstruction

Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Dr. Lucky Avweromre, accompanied by a team of engineers, has visited destroyed Okuama community to initiate vital rehabilitation efforts.

The visit marked a significant step in the recovery process for Okuama, which had been severely impacted by recent devastating events particularly of the Nigerian military.

Upon arrival on Friday, Dr. Avweromre and his team were warmly welcomed by the community chairman, Mr. Valentine Onovuakpo, alongside other local leaders and residents.

The reception was marked by a hopeful and enthusiastic atmosphere as the community looked forward to the forthcoming developments.

Following their welcome at the only surviving church building in Okuama, Mr. Onovuakpo guided the team on a tour of key locations earmarked for upcoming projects.

The immediate initiatives include the construction of a community hall, a modern primary health centre, and a secondary and primary school.

In alignment with the state government’s commitment to resettling displaced persons, arrangements are also underway to relocate the IDP camp from Otor-Ewu back to Okuama.

In his address to the community, delivered in their local dialect, Dr. Avweromre expressed gratitude to the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his prompt approval of the projects.

He highlighted that the governor’s decisive actions are crucial for facilitating the community’s return to normalcy.

“Our visit to Okuama is a testament to the governor’s dedication to ensuring that the indigenous people can return to their homes swiftly.

“We are here with engineers to assess the sites for various structures, including a community hall, a primary health centre, and educational facilities for our children,” said Dr. Avweromre.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace within the community and surrounding areas, urging residents to avoid taking the laws into their own hands amid any provocations.

Community leaders, including Chief Belvis Adogbo, Hon. Austin Aaron, and Hon. Victor Akemu, expressed their gratitude to both Governor Oborevwori and Dr. Avweromre for their ongoing developmental efforts.

They described the visit as pivotal in reinforcing their confidence in the leadership of both the governor and the council chairman, just as they pledged their full support for their administrations.

Okuama community came under utter devastation after 17 officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army were ambushed and killed following the land dispute between the Urhobo community and Okoloba community – an Ijaw community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta.
